RG Kar Rape Case: Calcutta High Court Orders Fresh SIT Probe
The Calcutta High Court has ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct a fresh probe into alleged suppression of evidence in the sensational RG Kar rape and murder case. The court directed the Central Bureau of Investigation to re-investigate claims related to evidence tampering and possible attempts to shield those involved in the crime. The SIT will be headed by the CBI’s Joint Director (Eastern Region) and will closely examine every development connected to the incident, beginning from the dinner attended on the night of the crime until the victim’s funeral. The High Court has also granted the investigating agency complete freedom to question any person considered relevant to the case. The court instructed the SIT to verify all allegations raised by the victim’s family and submit a detailed investigation report by June 25. According to reports, the order came after a petition filed by the victim’s parents, who accused the CBI of failing to conduct a proper investigation and suppressing crucial findings in the case. Earlier, the parents had approached the Supreme Court of India, which later allowed them to move the Calcutta High Court seeking a deeper probe. The case dates back to the night of August 8-9, 2024, when a trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered inside RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata. Her body was discovered in the hospital’s seminar hall the following morning, triggering nationwide outrage and protests by doctors and medical professionals. In January 2025, the Sessions Court sentenced the main accused, Sanjay Roy, to life imprisonment. The court stated that the matter did not fall under the “rarest of rare” category required for awarding the death penalty. Following massive public pressure and protests, the investigation was transferred to the CBI on August 13, 2024, after an order from the Calcutta High Court. The agency later conducted polygraph tests on several individuals connected to the case, including former RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh, police personnel, doctors, volunteers, and security guards. Despite these developments, the victim’s family remained dissatisfied, alleging that the investigation ignored the possible involvement of other accused persons apart from Sanjay Roy. The newly formed SIT is now expected to re-examine those allegations and uncover whether there was any deliberate destruction of evidence or suppression of facts during the original probe.
