Chinese President Xi Jinping Likely to Attend BRICS Summit in India After 7 Years
Chinese President Xi Jinping is likely to visit India in September 2026 to attend the upcoming BRICS Summit in New Delhi. If the visit takes place as expected, it will mark Xi Jinping’s first trip to India in nearly seven years, making it a highly significant diplomatic event for both nations. The BRICS Summit 2026 is scheduled to be held in New Delhi on September 12 and 13, with India serving as the chair of the bloc this year. According to sources, both China and India are preparing for the high-level visit. Xi Jinping last visited India in 2019, when he traveled to Mamallapuram near Chennai for an informal summit with Indian leadership. Russian President Vladimir Putin is also expected to participate in the summit. Russia has already confirmed Putin’s visit through the Russian state news agency TASS. Reports suggest that this will be Putin’s second visit to India within a year, highlighting the growing diplomatic engagement between India and Russia. Kremlin international affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov stated that President Putin will attend the BRICS Summit in New Delhi and is also expected to hold a bilateral meeting with Xi Jinping during the event. The meeting between the Russian and Chinese leaders is likely to attract global attention, especially amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and shifting international alliances. The possible visit of Xi Jinping comes at an important time for India-China relations, which have experienced several challenges in recent years. Diplomatic experts believe the summit could provide an opportunity for both countries to improve communication and strengthen cooperation through multilateral platforms like BRICS. Putin last visited India in December 2025 during the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit. Earlier this month, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also visited New Delhi to participate in a two-day BRICS-related meeting. With world leaders such as Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin expected in India, the BRICS Summit 2026 is shaping up to be one of the most important international diplomatic gatherings of the year.
