The United States and Iran are reportedly moving toward a major breakthrough that could ease global tensions and stabilize the international oil market. According to a report by the Financial Times, both countries have agreed in principle to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and extend the current ceasefire for another 60 days. Mediators and officials involved in the negotiations said the agreement may allow the strategic waterway to gradually return to normal operations over the next month.
Iran has also announced that shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz could return to pre-war levels within 30 days. This means commercial and oil-carrying vessels may soon be able to move through the route without major disruptions, offering relief to countries facing fuel shortages and rising energy prices since the conflict began.
The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes, with a large share of global crude oil supplies passing through it every day. Rising tensions and military conflict in the region had disrupted shipping traffic, causing instability in global oil markets and affecting supply chains worldwide. Many countries experienced fuel-related economic pressure due to increased transportation and energy costs.
US President Donald Trump also hinted at a possible agreement through a social media post. He stated that negotiations involving the US, Iran, and several regional countries were close to completion. Trump added that the deal would include the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and that an official announcement could be made soon.
The possible reopening of the waterway is especially important for countries heavily dependent on imported crude oil, including India. India imports more than 80 percent of its oil requirements, and a significant portion of that supply travels through the Strait of Hormuz. Any improvement in stability and shipping movement in the region could help reduce fuel prices and ease economic pressure.
Iran’s latest statement about restoring normal ship traffic has been welcomed globally. Analysts believe that if the agreement succeeds and the ceasefire holds, it could help calm international markets, strengthen global trade routes, and reduce fears of a prolonged energy crisis.
